Come join the astonishing, mystical and inspiring journey of one man as he experiences near-death adventures in the wilderness and ecstatic awakenings in consciousness while seeking the wisdom he needs to become a true healer, a shaman. From his deeply personal and honest recounting of his early life as a gypsy on the roads, railways and wilderness of America in the early 70’s, and through his later years as a highly sought-out Healing Friend and teacher, Peter’s story describes a path of liberation and healing that calls every heart to passionate participation in a sacred life where anyone can choose to live and be “absolutely and utterly free.”

Not since Autobiography of a Yogi has a book quite reached in and spoke to my soul like this book did. In fact, this book is reminiscent of Autobiography in the way you get a look into the early life, struggles, lessons, journey and practice of a healing master. And like Autobiography, it is humble, joyful, reverent, self-reflective and honest. A usual devour-er of books, I instead savored this one slowly, read it out loud to family members (after hearing about the story of fear and the bull, my 11 year old recently reminded me that behind all fear is love!) and took notes about it regularly in my journal. I cried and laughed aloud as I read the many personal stories he shares of his early life and stories of incredible healing taking place.

This book has deeply inspired my practice both personal and professional and met me on my journey at a critical juncture, answering questions I didn't know I had and offering a vision for the future of healing that is challenging, exciting and feels deeply satisfying. This will be on my bookstand next to my Tao Te Ching, Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita for regular inspiration. And yet it is written in and for our current day society, and Peter is of our time and a visionary for the future.

It is both a book for the spiritual seeker as well as the healing practitioner (yoga teacher, spiritual teacher, CAM practitioner, etc) alike. For the spiritual seeker, it gives more than just glimpses of the "Mystery", but true, tangible experiences that leave you breathless and in awe and wanting to get deeper in your own personal journey. His youthful courage (or is it just a deep trust in the Divine?) is so fun and exciting to read and his connection with nature and animals - from hurricanes to snakes to bulls to worms - is beautiful and inspiring.

For the practitioner/healer, it is truly ground-breaking in its call for "new" spiritual paths and relationships. Who is ready to move forward creating respectful healing partnerships where empowerment is the primary goal, and healing is always available to all of us regardless of whether you have the "right" tool or teacher? Personally, I am moving forward into my practice utilizing the philosophies and methodologies unwrapped in this book, and I encourage other practitioners to do the same.

The Way Lightning Splits the Sky Tales of a Modern Medicine Man Peter Churchill 9781490385310 Books Reviews

There aren't many books that simultaneously invite and stun readers into re-thinking their take on reality. This book is one.

The Way Lightening Splits the Sky, Tales of a Modern Medicine Man will remain one of the few luminous books that serve as a guiding light for me in this lifetime journey.
Obviously words can never adequately describe the impact your book has had on my experience. You have clearly elucidated a lifetime of lessons between its covers.

Of course, what speaks to me will be different than what might move anyone else.
In a nutshell, it ALL spoke to me, quite deeply - the autobiographical stories, the accounts of your Healing Partners, your gleaned insights, the "practical suggestions" and "nuts and bolts". Most importantly, the Healing Truths you have learned from a lifetime of consecrated dedication to helping humanity heal.
I can actually feel your heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears in these pages! It truly makes it a living book. Such a rarity.
To answer your question to me, below are the portions that spoke most profoundly to where I am in my own journey at this time

STORIES

* Joshua and Mr. Bones (Any story involving kids always moves me. This one was both heartbreaking and heart healing.)
* First Love, First Loss (Having plumbed the depths of human loss, any loss moves me. Especially ones involving children. That must have been SO painful for you as a child)
* Nana (Since my own grandmother was my true mother, this story spoke to my heart)
* Hurricane! (Loved it! Trees are my special connection to nature. The vision of you strapped to one in a hurricane is a vicarious treat!)
* Saving the buck's life (I do have trouble with the "sport" of hunting. What a creative way to save his magnificent life!)
* The Bull and the Rattlesnake (You've got some guts there!! I certainly agree in theory, but in execution.......I'm not sure I could have pulled it off!)
* The Holy Presence in the healing of the fella's neck lump (Wow. Quite a sacred moment. Did I say wow?)
* Healing of Nikki's migraines (Our daughter's complex migraines made this story of special significance)
* Saved at Sea (What a beautiful re-telling of a most astounding account. I have no doubt about its authenticity.)
* It's Real! (Not everyone can see what's normally unseen. It isn't surprising that the innocence and receptivity of a child will be able to peer into the world of spirit.)
* Horse Trance (Horses have always been one of my power animals. Beautiful story.)
* Autism stories (Our 19 year-old neighbor boy is autistic. His mother has done wonders with him. I want to give him your name if it's ok.)
* Jesus or the Devil (Such a crying shame. I have been rejected in the past by a few fundamentalist friends. It's no fun. I'm sure we will all have a good laugh over religions on the other side.)
* Come back! (Wow, again.)
* Laddie Boy (So touching. Mamy of us tend to blame ourselves in some way when a loved one passes. It's a shame, but there you have it. After a while of grieving, most of us see the light and let that guilt go.)
* Your family stories (I love getting to know people - especially those who mean a great deal to me. I so enjoyed the stories of your wife and children. Thank you for such heart-felt sharing. Beautiful family)

INSIGHTS

* Remembering our Source (Love and Joy) and who we really are.
* Knowing that we are all ordinary, as well as extraordinary. No one is above or below anyone else. No one needs to be an intermediary for anyone else's divine connection. (My guru experiences drove that home like a hammer!)
* Your inspired paradigm of Healing Friends and Healing Partners! (Perfect)
* The commitment to the moment-to-moment practice of Love given and received - even in the face of feeling unloved.
* The Way of a Healing Friend is a wonderful reminder of how to live our lives, as we interact side-by-side with the family of mankind.
* Shaman in Disguise helped me understand both the practical and spiritual qualities of a true Healing Friend, and how the sacred can and must infuse any true healing practice.
* The Shaman's Empowerment reminded me that "fixing" is not the same as "empowering" others. The first is a very human response. The second is a divinely inspired response.
* 50 years of Pain, "it's not my fault" showed me how our cell memory really holds onto pain, and how humanity is buried under so much subconscious agony. From many lifetimes, really. And how you help so many release that pain into the universe.
* Be absolutely and Utterly Free really spoke to me about unmasking ourselves and finding true happiness.
* Anyone can Wake Up brought me back to the few times in my life that I felt a real awakening. The concept of "Enlightenment" has always seemed a farce to me. Continual awakenings seem a worthy endeavor. I especially love this chapter.
* The Agents of Healing are insights that I want to absorb more and more into my daily journey.
* The New and Future Way of Authentic healing partnerships is so exciting! I have always felt this way. You elucidated it so clearly and profoundly.
* The Caring Heart just spoke volumes to me.
* What Miracle is this? Is such a beautiful way to see our link with the world of Spirit.
* The Universal Web of Light is a perfect way to tell others that remote healing work works!
* The Body is Like a Star confirms how conscious change brings us to the doorstep of endless potential and opportunity. I love that idea!
* Craft a Heart Made Life spoke of love, not technique. You obviously have a lifetime of technique at your fingertips (no pun intended), yet your true gift is through your heart.
* The Daily Art of a Healing Friend is a wonderful lifestyle to keep uppermost in thought.
* The Universal Message of Peace and Love is just that. Glorious.
* An Awakened Man or Woman reminds me that I am a reflection of the Divine Essence, like a ray from the sun. I m not the sun. But I emanate from my Source. And so I am able to express my sacred origin.
* Every Limit has a Doorway is an inspired message of hope.
* Happiness is Inherent keeps me on an inspirational path as I wade through the muck of life's challenges.
* Open Hands, Open Heart No Excuses is anyone's firm shake up to get with THE PROGRAM, no excuses!
* Do You Hear the Calling? Gives me much food for thought.
* The Shaman's Code needs framing.

As I said, Peter, every page of your book was inspiring. The above sections actually leapt out at me from the pages with a mighty force. Thank you ever so much for sharing your life work and experiences with the world. There is much need. You are a sacred servant of mankind.

With much appreciation, Laura K. Robinson-Long, Fellow seeker of Truth
The Way Lightning Splits the Sky Tales of a Modern Medicine Man has to be one of the most incredible stories of one mans trails and shared wisdom I have ever experienced. This book connects the reader deeply with its writings and allows you to question and find solutions to many of the important questions in health and well being. The unique way Peter Churchill presents the healing relationship brings to light so many of the questions and struggles so many of us experience. I would highly suggest this book to anyone looking to gain wisdom on how to greatly benefit their health and spirituality. Absolutely amazing story and writing!
Captivating story of life, love and purpose. Each chapter had a new an unique insight that had insight into the realm of heart and healing.
